Royal Artillery Paste Diamond & Enamel Regimental Sweetheart Brooch.
Also a Fine Gold Nurses Diamond Set Brooch Circa 1850


A very fine, rhodium plated circa 1900’S ’Royal Artillery sweetheart brooch', made from numerous parts, profusely decorated with paste diamonds to the crown and 'Artillery Gun' with 'Ubique' and 'Quo fas et gloria ducunt' scrolls inlaid with the finest of blue enamelling; the reverse impressed with a Ciro style crown. Very good condition, original pin fittings incorporating safety roller catch, perfect enamel and complete with all stones. An excellent, highly recommended brooch.

The Royal Regiment of Canadian Artillery

The Royal Regiment of Canadian Artillery has two mottoes: "Ubique" (Everywhere) and "Quo Fas et Gloria Ducunt" (Whither Right and Glory Lead). These may be borne on regimental appointments. The first motto "Ubique", takes the place of all battle honours in recognition of the artillery's service in all battles and campaigns.

In 1832, King William IV of England granted the Royal Regiment of Artillery the right to wear on their appointments the royal arms and supporters over a cannon with the motto, "Ubique Quo Fas et Gloria Ducunt" (Everywhere Whither Right and Glory Lead). The next year (1833), the order was amended to make clear that "Ubique" and "Quo Fas et Gloria Ducunt" were two separate mottoes. The Canadian Artillery was authorized to wear on its appointments the same royal arms and the motto "Quo Fas et Gloria Ducunt", plus the word "Canada". After the First World War, when the issue of battle honours was being decided, the RCA asked permission to use "Ubique" in place of "Canada" in recognition of distinguished overseas service in all campaigns. This was approved by King George V on 5 August 1926, and promulgated by G042/1927 the next year.

Antique Gold Pocket Watch Circa 1870 Lépine Calibre Bridge Movement - Thornhill Antiques

This type of fairly cheap watch, with a key wound and set movement and cylinder escapement, was made in the tens of thousands in Switzerland. 

The terms "Lépine movement" or "Lépine calibre" are not a brand name or maker, they describe a type of movement invented in the eighteenth century by Jean Antoine Lépine of Paris and describe the type of movements made by most watch makers in France and Switzerland during the whole of the 19th century. After 1850 a layout with the barrel bridge a straight bar and the cocks arranged more in parallel was used.

Swiss cylinder escapement watches were rather looked down upon by the English watchmakers, who considered that only the English lever escapement was capable of good timekeeping, and that cylinder escapements wore out quickly. But the Swiss made watches with hardened steel cylinders and escape wheels that were not only good timekeepers but also lasted well. They were able to sell these at a price that the British public liked, undercutting the expensive English watchmakers, who continued to look down their noses as their trade was taken away.
